Your Brand Is Already Being Quoted by ChatGPT. You Just Don’t Know What It’s Saying.

Three weeks ago, on a kickoff call with a regional accounting firm, we ran a live test against their brand. We typed nine variations of "best mid-market accounting firm in the Northeast" into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Their name appeared in zero answers. Their largest competitor, by revenue and employee count, appeared in eight of nine.

The room got quiet. Their head of marketing said: "But we rank top three on Google for those terms." Yes. They do. And that fact mattered three years ago.

The shift in numbers

Gartner’s late-2025 forecast is that 25% of all search query volume shifts to AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Bing Copilot — by end of 2026. Forrester’s 2026 B2B buyer research finds that 73% of B2B buyers consult an AI search engine before they ever talk to a sales rep. The implication is that for a meaningful slice of your buyer journey, your traditional Google ranking is no longer the determining factor in whether you’re considered. The AI’s answer is.

That’s a structural shift in how marketing works, not a tactical adjustment. SEO didn’t die. It got a sibling discipline with different rules.

Why traditional SEO doesn’t fully solve this

AI engines don’t use Google’s ranking algorithm. They were trained on a different set of sources, weighted differently. The signals that matter most:

  • Schema.org markup — Organization, Product, FAQPage, Review, BreadcrumbList. Most CMSs we audit emit a fraction of what they should, and the fraction they do emit is often invalid.
  • EEAT signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) — author bylines with verifiable credentials, citations to and from authoritative sources, structured About and Contact metadata.
  • Reddit and community presence — Reddit signed training-data deals with Google and OpenAI in 2024. If your brand isn’t organically present in relevant subreddits, you don’t exist in AI answers about your category. Most brands, including the accounting firm above, treat Reddit as out of scope.
  • Citation depth — trade publications, industry reports, peer-review boards, .edu and .gov resources. AI engines weight authority by citation graph more aggressively than Google does.
  • Content structure and depth — long-form, well-headed, citation-rich articles with clear answers to common questions get cited disproportionately to their share of total content volume.

Of those five, only the first overlaps cleanly with what most SEO retainers cover. The other four are uncovered work for most mid-market brands.

What we’re shipping at Intelligent IT

We launched a new service line this month called the AI Visibility Audit. It’s free for the first 30 days, no credit card. We submit your brand to six AI engines with twenty buyer-intent prompts. We capture every answer verbatim, log every citation, score sentiment, and compare side-by-side against your traditional Google rankings on the same queries. We sweep your reputation surface (Trustpilot, Glassdoor, BBB, Reddit, news, peer-review citations). We audit your website’s schema, EEAT signals, and Core Web Vitals. You get a 90-day prioritized roadmap that your team can execute against, owner per task, no 47-page PDF nobody reads.

It’s a productized loss-leader. If the audit shows you have nothing to fix, you owe us nothing. If it shows what most audits show, you have a clear conversation about a Tier 1 ($2,500/mo), Tier 2 ($5,000/mo), or Tier 3 ($10,000+/mo) growth retainer. Most clients land at Tier 2.

What sets this apart

Three things, in order of importance:

  • You see the actual answers. Most competitors hand you a number and a deck. We hand you the verbatim ChatGPT outputs about your brand. You read what your buyer reads.
  • We integrate with your IT/security stack. Schema fixes are hosting and DNS adjustments. EEAT signals are content and authoring infrastructure. Security headers and performance budgets are MSP work. Most marketing agencies stop at the recommendation; we ship the implementation through the same firm that already manages your IT.
  • It’s continuous. AI engines retrain. Their training cutoffs move. Your competitors publish. Your reputation surface drifts. A one-time GEO sprint loses signal within a quarter. Our retainer keeps the audit running monthly via AiT Pulse so you’re not guessing whether visibility is improving — you’re watching it.

The bottom line

The accounting firm I mentioned at the top is now in month two of a Tier 2 retainer. Their first re-audit showed name mentions in three of nine prompts — up from zero. By the end of quarter three we expect them in seven of nine. That’s real visibility, measured in receipts you can read, not in a vanity dashboard.
