SentinelOne vs. traditional antivirus: why EDR is now the floor
Antivirus asks 'have I seen this file before?' EDR asks 'is this behavior normal?' That difference is why one stops ransomware and the other reports it.

Traditional antivirus works by matching files against known-bad signatures. It was adequate when malware was a file. Modern attacks are behaviors: a legitimate macro that launches PowerShell, a trusted admin tool used to move laterally, a process that starts encrypting files very quickly. None of those have a signature, because the tools themselves are legitimate.
What EDR actually watches
Endpoint detection and response products like SentinelOne record process trees, network connections, registry and file activity, and evaluate them against behavioral models. When a chain looks like an attack — Office spawning a shell, a shell downloading a payload, the payload touching hundreds of files — EDR can kill the chain, roll back the changes, and isolate the machine from the network. That last part matters most: isolation in under 30 seconds is the difference between one laptop and the whole file server.
Why it changed the economics
- Rollback: SentinelOne can revert encrypted files from its own shadow copies, which turns some ransomware events into a non-event.
- Visibility: when something does happen, you get the full story instead of a “threat quarantined” popup.
- Automation: verified detections trigger isolation and ticket creation without waiting for a human to read an email.
- Insurance: carriers increasingly require EDR explicitly; traditional AV no longer satisfies the question.
What it doesn’t replace
EDR doesn’t fix a missing MFA policy, an exposed RDP port, or a backup nobody tested. It’s one control in the baseline — but it’s the one that most often turns a bad day into a short one. In a 25-location retail deployment, SentinelOne plus centralized monitoring took the client from recurring POS outages to zero security incidents in 18 months.
If you’re still on signature AV, this is the highest-impact upgrade available for the money.
